A good quality podcast and you can create endless short-form video content.
Every episode is packed with insightful quotes, funny moments, and interesting stories just waiting to be turned into engaging clips. You can slice and dice these segments into bite-sized videos perfect for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. Not just content for social, you can use these clips for email marketing or ads as well.
Before jumping into the detailed steps, let's first understand the process with an example. Imagine you run an Instagram page focused on creating informative content for marketers. For this blog, I aim to repurpose a video podcast of Neil Patel.
Firstly, I've defined my objective. The next step involves identifying segments for repurposing. In his podcast, Neil Patel discusses 11 strategies to grow brand awareness, so I'll create micro clips for each strategy. This gives me 11 video snippets from just a video which is less than 15 mins.
With timestamps in hand, the next phase is structuring and planning the video layout. Should the videos start with the host posing questions and Neil Patel answering, or should they begin directly with answers, displaying questions in text format? Alternatively, I could use hooks from each segment and seamlessly transition into the answers.
Once the layout is designed, I'll proceed to editing and final promotion.
So in short the steps will be
Set Objective -> Identify Key Segments -> Structure the Video -> Edit -> Promote
Now let’s look at each step in detail!
Step 1: Define your Objective
Start by jotting down your objective and understanding what you want to achieve by repurposing your podcast into short-form videos. Are you looking to direct traffic back to the podcast? Maybe you want to create informative and value-added content for your audience. Or perhaps you plan to use these videos for email marketing, or even as a lead magnet.
By clearly defining your goal, you can tailor your short-form videos to meet those specific needs and maximize their impact.
Let’s continue with the above example. So my objective is to educate my target audience who are marketers
Step 2: Identify Repurposable Segments
As my goal is to educate my audience I can break down each of the 11 strategies into separate clips. Explain what the strategy is and why it's important for growing brand awareness.
I can also compile clips that summarize the main points or most impactful strategies from the podcast. This gives a quick overview for those who want to grasp the essentials.
Few others directions that you can take based on other objectives are as follows:
- Highlight/Summary Clips: Focus on the most impactful parts of the podcast or a rundown of the entire podcast sort of. This can be used if you want to direct traffic to the podcast and want to give your audience a small teaser of what they can expect in the video.
- Quote Videos: Extract memorable quotes. In case you are wondering how to identify good quotes. Check out this blog where I discuss how to extract 10+ quotes from a podcast. Tips: There are multiple ways you can repurpose quotes from your podcast. You can use the video directly, or you can extract the audio and overlay it with appealing visuals that change every 5-6 seconds. This technique helps retain the audience's attention, as podcasts can sometimes be monotonous.
- Behind-the-Scenes/Bloopers: These candid clips show the human side of your podcast, making you more relatable and authentic to your audience. People love seeing the unpolished, real moments that happen off-camera because it adds a layer of transparency and fun. Plus, it gives viewers a peek into the process and effort behind the scenes, which can foster a deeper connection and loyalty to your brand.
- Q&A Sessions: Highlight interesting questions and answers from the podcast. This is the simplest way to repurpose your podcast. All you have to do is Convert each Q&A into a clip. The purpose of such clips is usually to educate.
Now here is a list of things you can look out for while selecting good segments.
- Engagement Potential: Look for segments that are likely to resonate emotionally with your audience.
- Educational Value: Choose parts that provide valuable insights or tips.
- Humor and Entertainment: Identify funny moments or entertaining anecdotes.
- Relevance: Ensure the content is relevant to current trends or audience interests.
- Clarity: Select segments that are clear and easy to understand without requiring too much context.
Step 3: Plan the Structure and Layout of the Video
When you're creating a short-form video from your podcast, kick it off with a captivating hook to grab attention right away. The first few seconds are crucial. Capture interest within the first 3 seconds. Use intriguing visuals, a surprising statement, or a strong hook to draw viewers in.
Keep the video short and sweet—aim for 15 to 60 seconds. Trim out any filler content, pauses, or off-topic parts to make it more polished and engaging.
So this is how I will structure it:
Hook
“Struggling to get your brand noticed? Discover the game-changing strategies top marketers use to skyrocket their visibility!”
The Strategy
“In this video, we’re diving into Neil Patel’s top strategies for growing brand awareness. Let’s get started!”
Call-to-Action
“Want more tips on boosting your brand? Follow us for more insights and strategies!”
Outro
“Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for our next video where we’ll explore the second strategy for growing your brand.”
A cool trend on Instagram right now is loop videos, where the video seems to continue seamlessly without you realizing it has restarted. To do this, pick a segment where the last line can naturally flow back into the first line. When the video ends and the person says the first line again, it should look like the video is just continuing. This trick can make your content more intriguing and get viewers to watch it over and over again.

Step 4: Edit the Selected Clips
If you have a team of editors, that’s great. In case you don't, there are plenty of tools available. Few other tools that you can use are Descript and Chopcast. Incorporate quick cuts, zooms, and animations to keep the video visually engaging.
Remote Podcasting Tools like Riverside.fm come with editing features as well. You can learn more about Riverside.fm in this blog.
